    Getting to New York

    Address

New York City, NY, United States

    Subway

Subway — The MTA subway system is the quickest way to navigate between neighborhoods. Key lines cover Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and parts of Staten Island. A single ride is $2.90, payable via MetroCard or the OMNY contactless system.

    Bus

The MTA bus network spans all five boroughs with more than 300 routes. Stops are identified by blue signs. Fares mirror the subway at $2.90. Express bus services reach outlying areas at a slightly higher rate.

    Taxi

New York's legendary yellow cabs are ubiquitous in Manhattan. The base fare is $3.00 with an additional $0.70 per one-fifth mile. A fixed rate of $70 applies for trips to/from JFK Airport (tolls and gratuity separate). All cabs accept card payments.

    On foot

Manhattan lends itself surprisingly well to walking. From Times Square to the southern edge of Central Park takes roughly ten minutes. From the Brooklyn Bridge to the heart of the Financial District is just a five-minute stroll. On foot is often the best way to soak up each neighborhood's character.

    From airports

JFK (John F. Kennedy) — Take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station ($8.25), then transfer to the subway or LIRR into Manhattan. Flat-rate taxi: $70. Journey time: 60-90 minutes.
LaGuardia (LGA) — Q70 bus to the subway (free with MetroCard), or taxi ($30-50). Journey time: 40-60 minutes.
Newark (EWR) — AirTrain to Newark Penn Station, then NJ Transit to Penn Station Manhattan ($15.25 combined). Journey time: 45-70 minutes.

    From stations

Penn Station — The city's main rail hub, served by Amtrak, NJ Transit, and LIRR. Centrally located in Midtown at 34th Street, with subway connections to lines 1/2/3 and A/C/E.
Grand Central Terminal — Historic station for Metro-North Railroad, also served by subway lines 4/5/6/7/S. An architectural landmark in Midtown East.

    Tip

If you plan to ride public transit often, consider the unlimited 7-day MetroCard ($34). The OMNY contactless system also caps your fare automatically after 12 rides within a rolling seven-day period.
